The Y20 Talk Series on “Youth, Governance & Democracy” was organized by IFNE, BTR Gov, G20 India, and Y20 India. It took place on April 21, 2023, at the Bodofa Cultural Complex in Kokrajhar, BTR Assam.
The series aimed to address the forgotten rich heritage and culture of the North East, which had been overshadowed by political reasons. It emphasized the need for unity and the fight for shared values and socio-cultural ethos.
The series highlighted the divisive tactics of some individuals based on caste, tribes, and languages as obstacles to progress. Despite 70 years of independence, the development of the Northeast region lagged behind other parts of the country. It stressed the importance of the support and cooperation of all the people in the region to bridge this gap.
The significance of youth in governance was acknowledged, given their access to information and empowerment. They were encouraged to understand their fundamental duties (Article 51A) and fundamental rights (Articles 12-35) as outlined in the Indian Constitution. Upholding sovereignty, unity, and integrity, promoting harmony, and renouncing practices derogatory to the dignity of women were emphasized.
Preserving the rich heritage, protecting the environment, and striving for excellence in all spheres of activity were identified as key aspirations. It was emphasized that by exercising fundamental rights and fulfilling the purpose of the Constitution, the spirit of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity could be upheld.
The Y20 Talk Series served as a platform to discuss these democratic values and concerns.
