Workshop on the Protection of Child Rights Tezpur

A District Level Workshop on the Protection of Child Rights was held at Tezpur on March 19, 2019. The workshop was jointly organized by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), the State Commission, and the Intellectual Forum of the Northeast at Tezpur University.

Mr. Paresh Shah inaugurated and moderated the event.
During the workshop, Ms. Rosy Tabah from NCPCR spoke about the vastness of child trafficking and its impact on human rights. Dr. Pilu Hazarika delivered an enlightening address on the various aspects and challenges of child trafficking. Ms. Antara Sen, ADC of Sonitpur District, highlighted the vulnerability of tea garden areas to trafficking and stressed the importance of working in the field to combat it effectively.
The inaugural session concluded with a presentation by students from Tezpur University, showcasing their social activities focused on child care and development, particularly among economically disadvantaged children in Tezpur.
In the technical sessions, Ms. Harsha Garg, a Legal Consultant of NCPCR, discussed existing legislation and policies to combat child trafficking. Dr. Rashmi Rekha Sharma from Assam State Police provided insight into the role of police and other stakeholders in combating child trafficking. Dr. Rajeev Doley, Head of the Department of Humanities at Tezpur University, and Ms. Rashmi Sharma, State Coordinator of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, were the speakers in the third technical session. Dr. Doley shed light on the traffickers’ process from the source point, including the misuse of customary laws and the role of illiteracy, lack of awareness, and poverty in remote areas of Tezpur. Ms. Rashmi Sharma spoke about the modus operandi of traffickers and provided details about the source, transit, and destination of trafficked individuals.
Overall, the workshop aimed to address the issue of child trafficking by bringing together experts, officials, and students to exchange ideas and strategies for combating this grave problem.
