The Roots of India-Nepal Relations (A Perspective on Guru Matsyendranātha)

Date: 10th & 11th February, 2025

Venue: PD Hall, Gauhati University, Assam, India

Introduction / Rationale

The historical and cultural ties between India and Nepal are deeply intertwined, and the figure of Matsyendranātha serves as a pivotal symbol of this connection. Originating from Kamrup (modern-day Assam), Matsyendranātha was brought to Kathmandu by King Nardeva of Nepal during the 6th or 7th century. Today, he is revered at the Bungamati Temple in Lalitpur, Kathmandu. The annual Matsyendranātha Rath Yatra, celebrated with great enthusiasm, epitomizes the shared heritage between these two nations. The people of Kamrup, affectionately referred to as “Maamaa” by the Nepalese, highlight these deep familial and cultural bonds.

Significance for India-Nepal Relations

Matsyendranātha represents a crucial cultural bridge between India and Nepal, especially through the annual Rath Yatra. The traditional “bet” (a type of cane) used for constructing the ceremonial chariot is sourced from Assam, despite legal and technical challenges in its export. This enduring tradition underscores the lasting cultural connections between Kamrup and Nepal, exemplifying how historical ties, religious practices, and cultural exchanges reinforce diplomatic and cultural relations between the two countries.
